Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?By Divya Singh | April 6, 2018, 7:05 a.m. GMT
Bitcoin? Blockchain? Satoshi Nakamoto? Since you are on this page you definitely know what these names are.
Almost everyone has seen drama around Bitcoin prices going up and down. Following Bitcoin, we have a Cryptocurrency market also. Bitcoin, the first digital token that promised to resolve the issue of double spending has given good returns on Bitcoin investment to quite a few of us and is still one of the promising coins which have a great future ahead. But do you know who created Bitcoin? Was it created by this man/woman/ group of people/ alien called Satoshi Nakamoto? Satoshi Nakamoto put the theory of Bitcoin on the internet in a white paper (not that the ‘paper’ was white in color, instead of by ‘white paper’ we mean a research paper). That was the beginning of Bitcoin in this world.
All we know about her/him- she/he is a mystery and maybe sitting on $ 5.8 billion fortune. We can make theories and keep guessing who is Satoshi Nakamoto, much like others, but nobody has any clue about who is she/he. There might not even be a ‘he/she’, instead there might be a group of people.
Let’s try and answer some of the questions that are raised about her/his existence. Because, that’s all we can do, i.e., ‘try to answer’.
Is Satoshi a British? - Most commonly she/he is said to be a Japanese person in ‘his’ late thirties. However, the use of perfect and English in both source code comment and forums and also the use of phrases like “Bloody hard” and British English spellings makes us doubt on her/his Japanese origin. Not to forget that Bitcoin software is not documented in Japanese. Maybe it's in English instead of Japanese to misguide the world, who knows. Is he really a Japanese?? Stefan Thomas, a Swiss coder, studied timestamps of all the 500 posts by Satoshi Nakamoto and from his graph it was seen that there was a steep decline in post to no post from 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM Greenwich Meantime (2:00 PM to 8:00 PM in Japan, a very unusual time to sleep or remain inactive for a person living in Japan.
Is Satoshi dead? We have this theory also that Hal Finney, the first person who received a Bitcoin transaction is ‘The Creator’, Satoshi Nakamoto. Mr. Finney is no more with us, he passed away in 2014 with the secret of Satoshi, assuming he knew.
Who else is claiming to be Satoshi? Few names more who have tried to be identified as Satoshi Nakamoto are: Craig Steven- An Australian who claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto, Dorian Nakamoto- A Japanese living in California, whose birth name was Satoshi Nakamoto, who once said on his interview told that he is no more associated with Bitcoin on asked if he is the founder of Bitcoin. Nick Szabo- He is the newly alleged founder of Bitcoin, as there are linguistic similarities Sazbo’s writing and Satoshi’s writings. Honestly I in some of the business conferences I have also claimed to be Satoshi. It's fun!
So still we are not aware of his identity, we have few fun facts about Satoshi Nakamoto though for you to play around with:
- Satoshi is a billionaire and owns around 1 Million Bitcoins
- He has spent only 500 Bitcoins
- Satoshi Nakamoto was nominated for Nobel prize in 2012 by Bhagwan Chowdhary
- Satoshi Nakamoto asked WikiLeaks not to take Bitcoin as a donation
- Bitcoins can be divided into smaller units called “Satoshi”
